Three centuries of tourist history have left a mark. It is not a question of documenting the origin of stereotypes nor dreaming of and perhaps sighing for the places and landscapes of a past that does not belong to us: the Amalfi Coast of travelers is an integral part of the cultural heritage to the extent in which eyes and perceptions, experiences and narrations, tastes and sensibilities, aesthetic conventions and cultural paradigms interpreted and connoted places, imbuing them with symbolic values and assigning them the communicative and evocative force they still possess. The marked contrast between present-day reality and that other Coast, the one rooted in the imagination of aspirations and suggestions, goes well beyond the contradiction that opposes places and their promotional image: it emerges from a shared legacy of values and significance, a legacy that in no way can be severed from the identity of the places and that, however, concealed as it is under a shroud of mystification and stereotypes, has some difficulty in asserting itself for what it is. The first encounter of the Coast with the international culture of travelers gave rise to a creative process of continual and mutual exchanges and influences that involved places, travelers, cultures of origin and respective identities. The non-classicality of Amalfi, the connotations, at first picturesque and then awe-inspiring, of the landscape that arouses empathy with nature, the exotic lure of Ravello with its Moorish atmosphere in some ways reminiscent of an Arabic world, the refined, distinguished cosmopolitanism of Positano and to conclude the glee of the seaside resort of Maiori belong to the Coast but just as much to its visitors of yester year and of today, they are common elements of a shared identity that justifies and motivates the desire to get together and the pleasure of meeting anew, even in times like these marked by disheartening banalities and irresponsible commercialization.
