The interpretations and representations of itself that the community decided to pass on, the explanations it managed to process in order to establish a relationship with and participate in the facts of the world, of life or nature relive in legends and proverbs. Sayings and proverbs are a perfectly intangible heritage that evolves from narration by word of mouth and has contributed to the continuity and solidity of communal identity over the ages, passing from generation to generation. Hovering between the fantastic world of imagination and didactic narration, between the great events of history and those no less important ones of everyday life, legends pass down facts and exorcise fears, hand down teachings and keep memory alive for posterity, admonish and reassure, sublimate reality providing explanations and connotations. Myths reveal the awe aroused by the events of the cycle of nature and its most terrifying forces, but they are also a way to suggest the possibility of bringing them back under the control of man and averting them. In turn, proverbs are a concentration of popular wisdom and unwritten ethical and moral rules that teach a specific manner of conducting oneself in this world and in society. The picture that emerges is that of a Coast peopled by mischievous monks and werewolves, of legends telling of miracles and intercession by the hand of God, of historical events turned into fairy tales, of angels and mysterious spirits, ancient feuds and consummate bamboozlements, poles set alight by magic fires and threatening whirlwinds mysteriously broken, shrewdness and hoaxes. It is a world that feeds itself on profound anthropologic questions and simple everyday rites, a universal world and yet a purely local one, a marvelous and at the same time absolutely real world, where an apparent naivety only goes to translate the most down-to-earth common sense.
