Tools and methods for cultural policies
As part of its programme of activities, the European University Centre for Cultural Heritage—in collaboration with the Department of Archaeology at the University of Oxford and with the support of NATO—organized a workshop titled “Beyond the Map: Archaeology and Space Technologies,” held at the Villa Rufolo Auditorium in Ravello on October 1 and 2, 1999.
The conference follows an initial meeting titled “Impact of Geographic Information Systems on Archaeology,” held in Ravello in 1993, the proceedings of which were published in *Interpreting Space: GIS and Archaeology*.
Initiative coordinator Gary Lock of the University of Oxford brought together archaeologists from ten different countries (England, Hungary, Slovenia, Poland, the Netherlands, the United States, Italy, the Czech Republic, Norway, and Romania) to foster an in-depth discussion on the impact of new technologies on archaeology. Digital mapping applications for virtual reality were presented and debated during the event, reflecting the growing need felt by archaeologists worldwide for new approaches to studying the past.
In particular, the results of research conducted at the Pompeii site—regarding the monitoring of archaeological sites in densely populated areas—were described.
Indeed, population growth and continuous urban development in the Pompeii area necessitate a precise census and mapping of all archaeological remains, protected areas, and past discoveries that were subsequently reburied for conservation reasons or due to a lack of funds.
In fact, the population of Pompeii has grown by more than 20% over the last 20 years. The municipal district covers an area of 1,222 hectares, with built-up zones occupying approximately 1,110 hectares. There remain 40 hectares of archaeological sites within the district yet to be explored, in addition to the excavations of the ancient city—which cover an area of 62 hectares, 51 of which have been unearthed. The research, coordinated by Maria Teresa Pareschi, was conducted by researchers from the CSGSDA-CNR in Pisa, with support from the CNR’s Targeted Project on Cultural Heritage and the Department of Civil Protection.
