GIS: an opportunity for integrating nature and technology and a new tool for disseminating scientific culture.

On Friday, October 12, and Saturday, October 13, the concluding conference of the project “GIS: Opportunities for Integrating Nature and Technology and a New Tool for Disseminating Scientific Culture” took place. The project was promoted by the Italian Geographical Society in collaboration with the European University Centre for Cultural Heritage, AIIG (Italian Association of Geography Teachers), and MondoGIS S.r.l., with the support of the Ministry of University and Scientific Research and under the patronage of the Province of Salerno.
Over the course of two days—October 12 at Palazzo Sant’Agostino in Salerno and October 13 at Villa Rufolo in Ravello—the results of the project were presented. The project actively involved seven schools in the Salerno area, selected by Antonio Iannone, the Provincial Councillor for Youth Policies and Training: the “Santa Caterina da Siena” Technical Institute and the “Da Procida” Scientific High School in Salerno; the “Gerolamo Gatta” Industrial Technical Institute (I.T.I.S.) in Sala Consilina; the IPSAR institute in Nocera; the “Pantaleo Comite” Institute in Maiori; the “E. Marini” Scientific High School in Amalfi; and the “Flavio Gioia” State Technical Institute for Tourism in Amalfi.
The initiative’s primary objective was to help expand scientific knowledge regarding GIS as a tool to support teaching in secondary schools, building on a pilot experiment launched in 2011. Following an initial research phase dedicated to developing the GIS-based educational application, the project moved into the school setting, implementing seminar and laboratory sessions for both teachers and students.
The final conference provided an opportunity to hear firsthand from the key participants—researchers, teachers, and students—about their experiences during the project. The initiative’s results were compiled in a publication titled GIS e Territorio. Laboratori sperimentali per una nuova didattica della geografia Rome, 2012, which was presented at the conference.
The meeting is part of the initiatives organized by the Italian Geographical Society, an association accredited by the MIUR for the training and professional development of teaching staff (Ministerial Decree 177/00 – Directive 90/03).
