Ukraineans and Romanians form the population of Sfântu Gheorghe.

The locality, typical for Danube Delta settlements, has an irregular structure and crossing streets. But it also has something very specific - Black Sea vicinity – which has a strong influence on its economy.

Traditional household consists of the house itself and few annexes. Building materials are specific to deltaic zone: reed, wood, soil. Fretting motifs (sun rays, twigs) and pillars’ capitals decorate the house.

Regarding the traditional occupations, fishing represents the main one. Fishing determines rural tourism development and also a specific gastronomy. Gastronomy of this zone is famous for its specific plates: fish borsch, fish cooked with onion and oil, carp cooked in the oven, boiled triangular dumplings with cheese.

Breeding is another important occupation: generally the beasts are let free in the swamp during summer and brought to shelter in wintertime.

Population kept the traditional customs. There is a very interesting Ukrainean New Year custom named Melanca consisting in a carnival game based on disguising and which signify the chasing of the evil spirits. Romanians practice this custom too, due to the life together with the Ukraineans.
