The study days ‘Representing the Landscape: Between Tradition and Technological Innovation’—carried out under the scientific coordination of the Italian Geographical Society, which is a member of the Ravello Centre’s corporate body—aimed to focus attention on cartography as a classic tool of geographical representation and on the most recent landscape depiction techniques. From this perspective, the connection between tradition and innovation should not be understood merely as a natural evolution over time toward new frontiers of knowledge, but rather as a close, immediate, and unavoidable interdependence between the two factors. This is the key interpretation characterizing the debate that unfolded over the two days: the first was aimed at providing the interpretative models delivered by historical and traditional cartography; the second was dedicated to the changes that landscape representation is undergoing through the use of the most advanced methodological and instrumental innovations. These innovations are designed, in particular, to rediscover—through their higher resolution power—the texture, paths, and signs left on the territory by the cultural heritage of which the landscape is a supreme expression.
