Sulina can be defined as a typical inter-ethnical space.

In time, due to the historical conditions, beside the Romanians came Greeks, Russians, Lipovans, Turks, French, English and Jewish people. The multicultural and multi-confessional character is reflected by the presence of houses for different cults.

The free-port status possessed by the town gave a certain freedom to the social and economical life. This freedom has been reflected in patterns and behavioral attitudes which interfered with tradition and conservative spirit.

The settlement has a regular and linear structure. It developed on both banks of the Danube, the criteria for houses disposition along the “first” and “second” streets is not ethnical but water sources access.

The type of architecture is urban and it developed as a result of cultural interferences between occident style and contemporary style. Sulina’s specific house had a high rocky foundation, and shingle roof. Manufactures, shops or café occupied the ground floor space.

The rural architecture, which planimetry and elevation are specific to the villages of Danube Delta, is represented by purlieus houses.

Cultural buildings around the lighthouse, built in 1868-1869, represents a special element which occidental characteristics.

Regarding the traditional customs, Sulina kept faiths and habits of the each religion, respecting the ethnical identity (first Eucharist at Catholics, feast costume at Lipovans, pleasure to sing at the traditional instruments at Greeks etc.)
The spirit of tolerance is always present and it is reflected by the reciprocal respect and the global participation to the feasts and cerebrations of the community.
