Except for Tramonti, the most densely populated municipalities are also the main coastal tourism sites. The population density highlights a marked dualism between hilly and coastal municipalities, although the past decade highlighted a trend to re-balance confirmed by the demographic dynamics of the various municipalities. Amalfi Coast is still undergoing a long stage of demographic decline. The average age of the population is higher than the provincial average; according to the population turn over index a further substantial decline is expected. The modernisation of the economic and productive structure has deeply changed the features of most municipalities, above all of those which in the latest time have been experiencing a growth in the tourism sector or a crisis in traditional activities. This resulted in a labour shift from the primary to the tertiary sector. The accommodation and catering sectors play a crucial role for employment above all in the traditional tourism sites and in those located in the neighbouring areas. The production sector is quite viable: in the past decade the growth rates recorded in peripheral municipalities have been higher than the ones recorded in the towns which used to be the drivers of the local economy; however most local units and employees are still concentrated in these towns. While declining, agriculture is still playing a crucial role in a number of local economies. Given the small size of the firms (most of them family businesses), the arboriculture-related activities and the morphology of the area, the development of the sector should be based on typical quality products and re-discovery of the traditional farming techniques. Unemployment, although still quite high, is declining and youth unemployment is declining as well. Education level has increased. While differences do exist amongst the various municipalities, social-economic indicators are quite positive: Housing conditions are satisfactory from the quantitative and qualitative point of view; the number of cars per 100 inhabitants is higher than the provincial average and it is still increasing; per capita income is often higher than the provincial average.
